Notice for Nominations of Office - 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections

Cobourg, ON (April 24, 2026) – Notice is hereby given to the municipal electors of the Town of Cobourg that they may file their Nomination Paper for the 2026 Municipal Election with the Office of the Town Clerk by booking a Nomination meeting. Meetings are being held at the Municipal Clerk’s Office located at Victoria Hall, 55 King Street West in Cobourg, beginning on Friday, May 1 at 8:30 a.m. until Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m. 

Nomination Filing Meetings can be booked through the Town’s Municipal Election Website www.CobourgVotes.ca/FilingaNomination,or can be booked and confirmed by calling the Clerks Office at 905-372-4301 extension 9520.

The required nomination fee shall be in the form of cash, debit, a certified cheque or money order. The filing fees are as follows:

  • the position of Mayor is $200
  • the position of Deputy Mayor or Councillor/School Board Trustee is $100.

Each nomination filed (excluding School Board Trustee Candidates) must include an endorsement of nomination form which must be signed by 25 eligible voters supporting the nomination. The individuals providing signatures must sign a declaration stating that they are eligible to vote in the municipality on the day they sign the endorsement.

Candidate information including the links to the required legislative forms are available on CobourgVotes.ca.

You are entitled to be an elector and to run for office if you are not disqualified by any act or law and on voting day you are:

  1. a resident of the Town of Cobourg; or
  2. a non-resident, who is an owner or tenant of land in the Town or the spouse of or same sex partner of such owner or tenant; and
  3. a Canadian Citizen; and
  4. at least 18 years of age.

Eligible individuals may file a Nomination Paper for the following Municipal Offices: 

Mayor (1 to be elected at large)
Deputy Mayor (1 to be elected at large)
Councillor (5 to be elected at large)

Positions for which a person may file a Nomination Paper for the Office of School Board Trustee (English, French, Public and Separate School Boards):

The following Nominations shall be filed at the Town of Cobourg Municipal Clerk’s Office:

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (English Language Public School Board)
Two (2) Trustees to be elected for the combined area of Alnwick/Haldimand Township, Town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township and the Municipality of Port Hope.

Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board (English Language Separate School Board)
One (1) Trustee to be elected for Northumberland County.

The following Nominations shall be filed in the City of Oshawa Municipal Clerk’s Office, 50 Centre Street South, Oshawa:

Conseil Scolaire Viamonde (French Language Public School Board)
One (1) Trustee to be elected by French Public electors in the Regional Municipality of Durham, Counties of Northumberland, and Peterborough and Cities of Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough and Quinte West

Conseil Scolaire Catholique MonAvenir (French Language Separate School Board) One (1) Trustee to be elected by all French Catholic Electors in the areas of the Region of Durham, County of Haliburton, County of Northumberland, County of Peterborough, City of Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, and City of Quinte West.

Exception for additional nominations:
In the event there are insufficient number of certified candidates to fill all positions available, nominations will be reopened for the vacant positions only on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and such additional nominations, if required, may be filed in the office of the municipal clerk/returning officer.

The Town of Cobourg will host a Candidate Information Night on Thursday, April 30, featuring a “Municipal Government 101” presentation delivered by municipal law expert John Mascarin, representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and the Clerk and Deputy Clerk from the Town of Cobourg.

Candidate Information Night # 2

The second Candidate Information session will take place at the Northumberland County Headquarters and will include a presentation by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect directly with local municipal clerks, including the Town of Cobourg, to ask specific questions. The County Clerk will be available to provide information related to the role of County Councillor.
