Register to Vote!

To ensure that you are on the voters list for the 2026 Municipal Election, visit Elections Ontario to confirm, register or amend your information until August 14, 2026. 

We encourage you to confirm that you are on the Voters List as soon as possible. Being on the list will make your voting experience easier, and help you avoid a trip to the municipal office to be added closer to the election.

If you are a resident, owner or tenant of property in Ontario, a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and not legally prohibited from voting, you can vote in Ontario’s municipal and school board elections.  

By visiting Register to Vote, eligible voters can:

  • confirm their information on the voters list
  • update, add or remove information on the voters list

Register to Vote is easy to use. 

  • To confirm your information, you'll need your name, date of birth, and property address.
  • Additional ID is required to update, add or remove voter information.
  • You can also register as an absentee voter or if you are 16 or 17, add your name to the list of future voters.

An eligible elector may have residences in two (2) local municipalities at the same time if:

  • the person lives in one of the local municipalities to attend an educational institution, but not with the intention of changing their permanent lodging place.
  • the person’s permanent lodging place is in the other local municipality.

In this scenario, the elector is eligible to vote in both their "home" municipality and in the municipality where they currently live while attending school.

A person’s residence is the permanent lodging place to which, whenever absent, the person intends to return. A person may only have one residence at a time. If a person has no other permanent lodging place, the place where they occupy a room, or part of a room as a regular lodger or to which they habitually return is their residence.

Eligible electors with no address or permanent lodging place can vote and determine their residence by:

  • The place to which the person most frequently returned to sleep or eat during the five weeks preceding the determination is their residence.
  • If the person returns with equal frequency to one place to sleep and to another to eat, the place to which they return to sleep is their residence.
  • Multiple returns to the same place during a single day, whether to eat or to sleep, shall be considered one return.
  • A person’s declaration regarding the places to which they returned to eat or sleep during a given time period is conclusive, in the absence of evidence to the contrary.

If you are eligible to vote in the Town of Cobourg as well as other municipalities, you can vote in all those municipal elections.

If you are eligible to vote in another municipality that is within the County of Northumberland, you may only vote for School Board Trustee once. 

The following persons are prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act:

  • A person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
  • A corporation
  • A person acting as executor or trustee in any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
  • A person who was convicted of corrupt practices as defined in the Municipal Elections Act

School Board Support

As a property owner, you are required to support a school system even if you do not have children or your children are not currently attending school. The school board you support dictates for which school board trustees you are eligible to vote.  

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is responsible for maintaining information on the school support associated with your property.
